Chicago 2010 ABA Techshow

 

Was in Chicago for the American Bar Association Techshow.  It takes place at the Hilton during the spring every year.  Debbie Foster was the chair of the show,  and she was nice of enough to invite me to hang out in the Conrad Hilton Suite  (Where Obama was on Election Night).  The Suite is at the very top of the hotel. As you can see from the pictures below,  we snuck out on to the helicopter pad at night.

Greg Bray and I playing some pool in the suite.   Greg and I put on a round table panel a little later,  it turned out to be a big hit. 

How to Speed up ITunes

If you are running ITunes on a windows machine,  it is probably the biggest resource hog.   Here are some tips to speed it up.

Delete the playlists above.  Delete all Playlists that are in Purple.  It takes ITunes a lot of resources to keep these up to date.  So if you never use them,  get rid of them. 

Go to the preferences and uncheck everything.  Don’t look for shared libraries.

Don’t look for Apple TV’s.

Don’t look for remote speakers.

Get the point,  you don’t want ITunes to look for any of this stuff, it takes up memory.  Uncheck it all. 

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is one of the most inspirational stories I have ever read.  It tells the story of William Kamkwamba who lived in Malawi, Africa.  A famine forced his family into starvation and his parents could no longer afford to send the fourteen year old  to  school.  He spent a lot of his time at the Library where he saw a picture of a wind mill.  In three months time he created one.

Thoughts on Lost (Spoilers)

 

Sayid’s going into the pool is just like Ben going into the pool in the season before. 

For some reason I think that Jacob and the man in black are Cain and Able. 

The people are the numbers:

Locke = 4

Hurley = 8

Sawyer = 15

Sayid = 16

Jack = 23

Kwon = 42 (Not sure if it is Jin or Sun)

Kate is not a candidate.  Maybe the candidates can only be men.  That means Kwon refers Jin. 

Seems that John’s father did not push him out of the building,  which leads me to believe that his father also did not sleep with Sawyer’s mother. 

Ben gives the best eulogy ever.

Pirate Latitudes

This book was published after Crichton’s death and is about Pirates,  arrrrhhh!

It was okay,  but not that great.  Besides the technical aspects of Crichton’s work,  he is great at creating relatable characters'.  I didn’t relate.  Now reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,  and next will be The Checklist Manifesto. 

 

Loving the nook, but it does not sync with my place in books with the iphone like the Kindle and their app does.

My parents gave me the Nook for Christmas and it has finally arrived.

First question I often get is why not a Kindle?  When the kindle first came out,  you could not install the kindle software on a laptop for reading.  You had to buy a kindle to read amazon’s ebooks.  Barnes and Noble allowed you to download the software on your laptop to read books.  So if I were to purchase a kindle,  there are about 20 ebooks that I could not read on it.

There are only about 12 magazines for the nook right now, but the book selection is pretty extensive.  It connects to the AT&T network to download books for free and it is built on the android platform so we will probably see some apps come out for it. 

Pretty happy with it. 

Shockey gets shocked

I had a little incident right before the Saints Super bowl championship.  When I went to plug in an antenna signal booster, the ac adaptor blew up in my hand, numbing my arm,  gave me a blister on my thumb and causing a  huge ringing sound in my head for the next hour.  Lucky for us, we could watch the game without the signal booster.
